After receiving the instructions from Arjuna, The Guda:ke:sa, Lord Krushna, who is none else than The Hrushi:ke:sa, kept the chariot in the middle of both the armies. Note - Here both Lord Krushna and Arjuna were recognized by Sanjaya with particular names. Both are revealing their abilities. Our senses are called hrushi:kas because, they are ‘ hrushyanthe: ’ enjoying the qualities of objects first and then, ‘ harshayanthi ’ they make us feel that joy. Our senses are always with us and we think that they are subserving us. The senses are although with us yet, we are hardly controlling them. They have their own way of functioning. Even at times, they appear as if they areunder our control, still their functioning is highly conditioned. The sense-controller of not only all the human beings, but also all other creatures, whosoever may be, is only Lord Krushna. That is why He is named after Hrushi:ke:sa. He can allow the senses of somebody to function and for some He may deny. Even for one soul, He may permit some senses to work and some other to stop. On the other hand, the Arjuna was named after Guda:ke:sa. In samskrutha language it is said that “nidra:lasye: guda:ka: sya:th” . It means nidra: = Sleep and a:lasyam = laziness, both together are called as guda:ka: collectively. By virtue of his penance and effort, the Great Arjuna could overcome both of these bad tendencies, and got control over them. Hence, he was considered as “guda:ka+ i:sa = guka:ke:saha. Though Arjuna was proud of his own ability in becoming aguda:ke:sa, still, he was also being controlled by Lord Krushna only, as The Lord only is the Universal Controller. From 15th slo:ka onwards, Lord Krushna started showing His power of controlling the senses of Arjuna, while He was blowing the conch. We can observe that control of Lord over Arjuna, in Arjuna’s own words, in the next few verses. In fact, Lord Krushna spoke the whole Bhagavad Gi:tha and Arjuna was able to listen to all that preaching without any breakage. Can we imagine that it would be possible, when there were many warriors, horses, elephants etc., gathered all around and making a lot of noice, and very anxious to start the fight ? Further, all these creatures are also not well disciplined students before a teacher, who is very strict in his class room. Still Arjuna could listen to the whole preaching because, Lord allowed only Arjuna’s senses to function with all curiousness and the senses of all others to stall, till He finishes His Sermon in the War Field. To confirm the overall supremecy of Lord Krushna, Sanjaya here, used two names to both Lord Krushna and to the Arjuna viz., Hrushi:ke:sa and Guda:ke:sa. |
