Text Box: Bhagavad Githa for ME

Text Box: Jai Srimannarayana!
Text Box: Maha:bha:ratha is one of the greatest Ithiha:sas of Vedic Culture. Ithiha:sa means a record of events that had happened as it is.  Maha:bha:ratha  contains 1,25,000 slokas. It is treated as an ocean of knowledge, because of the valuable morals it teaches us. As ocean gives us variety of valuable gems like pearls, corals etc., we get great knowledge from Maha:bha:ratha.

Many people know about 2 great gems of Maha:bha:ratha, 1) Srimad Bhagavad Githa, and 2) Sri Vishnu Sahasranama sthothram. Maha:bha:ratha contains 18 volumes in it. Each volume is called as “PARVA”. Among these 18 parvas, Srimad Bhagavad Githa appears in the Yuddha Parva.

Bhagavad Githa is a small part of Maha:bha:ratha consisting of 700 slokas, where as Sri Vishnu Sahasra Nama of 100 slokas, is a part of Bhishma Parva. Again, Srimad Bhagavad Gita contains 18 chapters. Each Chapter will be called an “adhya:ya”. The Great Sage Veda Vyasa is the author for the whole of Mahabharatha, yet, it is Lord Krushna who spoke Bhagavad Githa directly. The sage Ve:da Vya:sa just recorded it while Lord Krushna was preaching it to Arjuna.

Githa means a song. Many slo:kas in Githa were sung by Lord Krushna. He alone was considered as Bhagavan because, He is full of divine qualities with no blemish. Thus His song became Bhagavad Gita. The Lord sung this celestial song just before the beginning of the Kurukshethra war.
Pandavas and Kauravas were ready to fight with each other. Both their armies were arrayed. Arjuna requested Krushna to be his charioteer in the war field. Compassionate Krushna accepted to be so. Krushna and Arjuna blew their conches followed by Yudhistthira, Bhi:ma, Nakula and Sahadeva, as an indication to start the war. Immediately Kauravas replied by blowing their conches, all at a time.

Arjuna wanted to see both the armies at a time so that he can get a clear idea about the forces of enemies. So, he asked Krushna to lead his chariot into the middle of the armies in the war field. He was very eager to fight.  Krushna took him into the middle of the armies. He faced his enemies to count them………….but; there he saw his dear grand father Bhi:shma, his beloved teacher Dro:na, and his near & dear brothers, uncles and friends.
Pandavas and Kauravas were cousins and all the people in both the armies were their relatives and friends only. Suddenly, Arjuna started feeling very bad about killing his relatives for the sake of Kingdom. He felt that he can’t fight anymore. He was depressed and lost the zeal to fight and win over the enemies. He was not able to see them as enemies any more.
